Well after years of news, concept art, sneak previews, and much anticipation, the wait is finally over – Epic Universe has finally arrived in Orlando, Florida.  We’ve been anxiously awaiting to experience Orlando’s first theme park in over 25 years and the anticipation has paid off.  Myself and fellow Firefly advisors were fortunate enough to experience a preview of Epic Universe that includes 5 themed worlds filled with immersive theming, great attractions, and amazing food.

Opening May 22nd, here’s our guide and inside tips on everything Epic, a true immersive theme park masterpiece to experience for years to come.

Epic Universe Overview & Description

Epic Universe is an immersive theme park filled with amazing details, including storylines for the park itself. Centered around the Chronos Tower portal entrance, each of the portals power and provide energy to the Chronos to open a gateway to the universe.  This alignment with Chronos sends you on a journey to find your adventure in each of the portals and worlds the park has to offer. As you enter the park, you’re reminded that “Beyond this gate find gardens green, and epic worlds to fill your dreams.” This theme of celestial power and energy also serves as the entryway for all the Epic portals to the themed worlds to discover your adventures and immersive dreams made a reality. The entryway and story are stunning, reminding you that your immersive dreams are not far away within the Epic Universe portals.

Central Hub: Celestial Park

Once walking through the entryway of Epic Universe, you’re greeted by the hub: Celestial Park.  This world serves as a gateway to the 4 additional portals to journey and explore during your visit to the Epic Universe.  This themed world is vibrant with features and designs based on astrology, including beautiful gardens and dancing fountains.

Within Celestial Park, there are two attractions to enjoy.  This includes the Constellation Carousel & Stardust Racers.  The Constellation Carousel features various animals including lions, peacocks, fish, and dragons and gives a new spin to a classic carousel attraction.  You are lifted gently high into the air with rotations to a beautiful song with sights of stars and planets.  We experienced this carousel during the day, I can only imagine its beauty and wonder at night.  Speaking of night, the other attraction in this world, the Stardust Racers, we experienced at park close.  This is a thrill seekers best pick for this park.  With speeds of up to 62mph and heights of 133 feet, Stardust Racers is a fun coaster that does not disappoint. The duo coaster design is thrilling, the corkscrew passing with the other coaster was something I have not experienced before.  It was amazing, but I think my fellow advisor would say otherwise 😉! Also within Celestial Park is Astronomica, a splash pad play area for children. This was not up and running during our time at Epic, but it will come in handy with the heat this summer.

Celestial Park is also home to entertainment, including the Hemisphere Stage, where live music can be found.  This was a fun touch to see live performers provide music that could be heard throughout the Celestial area.  There are also character experiences to be found, including Celetians roaming the area, pausing to display in statue form.

There are a lot of dining options within Celestial Park, including 2 table service dining experiences. First, the Atlantic is an aquarium setting restaurant with amazing views of the park that offers a surf and turf menu. Next, the Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant, themed with dragons and lanterns, serves Japanese, Chinese, and Thai meals.  This world is also home to 6 quick service food options and 3 bars to enjoy.  From pizza to bao buns, this world has a lot of cuisine to experience.  Although we did not dine in Celestial Park, I’ve heard some great things about Pizza Moon and Frosty Moon and am excited to try those on my next visit to the park.  Lots of shops can be found within Celestial as well, including Epic Universe park merchandise as well as a great array of the portal worlds merchandise as well in case you’re looking to purchase items on your way out of the park.

How to Train Your Dragon: Isle of Berk

Set between the second and third films, the How to Train Your Dragon: Isle of Berk portal allows you to walk along Vikings and dragons in great detail.  Upon entering the portal, you are greeted by the Viking and dragon statues from the film and a large lagoon with Viking ships and the various dragons seen in the film.  Filled with colors, amazing carving details, and specific locations from the film, you’ll truly feel as though you’re in Berk itself.  This world is filled with amazing experiences, from attractions to dining, it’s a fun, immersive experience I never wanted to end.

Within the Isle of Berk, you’ll find three attractions to enjoy.  Hiccup’s Wing Gliders is a fun theme coaster, topping speeds of 45 mph.  This coaster is themed to Hiccup’s latest invention of a flying machine designed to simulate what it’s like to fly on a dragon.  Along the way, you’ll encounter Toothless and friends during your flight.  This coaster was amazing, with beautiful theming, vibrant colors, and a fun experience that quickly became a favorite of mine and fellow advisors.  From the views of the Isle of Berk to the detail, It’s such a fun attraction that leaves you smiling from start to finish. The Dragon Racers Rally is another attraction themed to practicing becoming a dragon racer to help you learn how to control your flight including attempting barrel rolls or just enjoying the heights of 67 feet in the air to view the beauty of Berk.  This was a fun attraction to view Berk; however, it was super short and difficult to attempt the flying maneuvers. As a travel advisor, I would not recommend waiting a long time for this ride.  And finally, the famous water ride every theme park has to have, the Fyre Drill is themed to help you learn how to put out dragon fires with twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut creating a watery interactive boat battle competing with other Vikings to outsoak one another.  Warning, you will be absolutely soaked on this one! It was super fun and surprising with the water features coming from every direction.  A good one to save for the end of your day or when you really need a cool down from the heat.  Another fun attraction is the Viking Training Camp, a colorful interactive play area for children to enjoy.  This play area is perfectly themed, complete with traditional playground items and various interactive games.

A must see entertainment show is found within Berk.  The Untrainable Dragon is a beautiful, spectacular live show featuring some of your favorite characters to solve the mystery to train the Untrainable Dragon.  This musical boasts some stunning sets, touching storylines, and the ultimate experience of witnessing Toothless soaring above you, flying throughout the theatre.  Be sure to make time to experience it while visiting Berk!

Characters are found roaming throughout Berk, including Tuffnut and Ruffnut, Gobbler, and Astrid. Be sure to keep an eye out and see them during your time exploring! The ultimate character meet and greet is housed at the Haddock Paddock, a space to come face to face with friendly Toothless. This was an amazing experience, the Toothless animatronic was spectacular with perfect detail, a must-do for fans!

There’s lots of shopping options within Berk.  One stop includes the Toothless Treasures.  What makes this shop special is your ability to select a dragon egg to adopt (purchase) and complete a dragon adoption ceremony.  You’ll be asked to recite an oath, hatch the dragon, and hear Viking cheers and drums upon adopting your dragon.  Your dragon will be placed in its newly hatched egg that becomes a carrying case for your dragon to sit in as you continue to experience Berk.  This was so fun and cute to do! I love my little dragon and the memory of adopting him.

The Isle of Berk has some amazing dining options that hold some of our favorite food within Epic Universe.  Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel, located near the Viking Training Camp, served up one of our favorites, the Mac and Cheese Cones.  With three to choose from, including traditional, pulled pork, and honey hot chicken, these amazing mac and cheese items are served within an everything-seasoned bread cone. This item is absolutely a must-have if you’re a fan of mac and cheese!  The Mead Hall is located at the back of the Isle of Berk and served up my favorite meal in Epic Universe.  This quick-service dining hall has some amazing carved wood designs and a grand chandelier.  The Berkserker’s Meatballs (Swedish meatballs) with sweet potatoes were the best I’ve ever had! This is a great spot to sit and enjoy a meal and great theming.  The Spit Fyre Grill is another quick service stand serving bowls with rice, meats, and greens as well as those famous mac and cheese cones (see, they’re so good there are two locations for them).  Looking for some sweets within Berk, be sure to stop by the How to Treat Your Dragon located across from Mead Hall. In here, you’ll find some great treats, including orange, cookie dough, and sour apple whoopie pies. Some of the best desserts we tried!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Ministry of Magic

Themed after the Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts universe, this portal will transport you to 1920s Paris Muggle park before passing under the Phoenix Arch to enter the Place Cachee, a hidden Paris shopping district for wizards and non-magiques (muggles) to explore magical streets filled with dining, a circus, and time traveling.  Upon entering this portal and through the Phoenix Archway, this world is massive and spectacular.  It truly feels as though you are walking the streets of Paris with touches of magic to be found everywhere.

Within this world, you’ll find one attraction and it’s the biggest one Universal has completed to date, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry of Magic.  During our preview, only the virtual queue was available for guests to experience the attraction. With our 2 days in the park, this was the biggest challenge to secure a spot given the structure of the virtual queue and the technology of the Universal App (more on that later), and we were unsuccessful in securing a timeslot. The attraction was open for guests to experience the queue, and we were lucky enough to witness it.  Entering the Paris Metro-Floo station and using some Floo Network magic, you are transported to 1990s London to enter the Ministry of Magic. You step through the archway of the Metro-Floo station with green flames and floo powder to enter the atrium of the Ministry of Magic.  When I say my jaw was on the floor and that I had goosebumps for minutes, I mean it.  I had no words for the level of detail, beauty, and the immersive feeling of stepping into the Ministry for the first time.  It is stunning, and the scale is something never achieved before now.  I could have spent days in there just exploring, I did not want it to end.  We were allowed to walk through a little further, the details continued with tributes to fallen Aurors, the Hall of Ministers, and a locker room for training Aurors.  From experiencing the queue, I can’t wait to ride this ride that many are calling the best of Epic Universe. Next trip, it’s first on my list!

Entertainment can be found in every corner of this Wizarding World.  Many character interactions are found, including Beauxbatons Academy and Hogwarts students carrying The Book of Monsters, an Auror from the Ministry roaming the streets looking for suspicious characters, and a trio of street musicians.  At every turn, you’d find a character roaming or live music playing; it was fun and added to the immersive element. The detail is even finer within the windows of the shops, filled with little easter egg characters.  What’s the Wizarding World without a little spell-casting and magic? Within this new world, you’ll find new spell-casting spots for your interactive wand use.  The big entertainment show within this world is the Le Cirque Arcanus, a showcase of magical creatures featuring Ringmaster Skender, who has stolen Newt Scamander’s suitcase filled with beasts to bring his circus back to life.  We were able to see part of the preshow; however, due to technical difficulties, we were unable to witness the full show.  From others who have experienced it, it’s a great show filled with aerial artists, puppets, and fantastic beasts.

Dining within the Wizarding World is a must.  Here you’ll find two quick-service restaurants, a bar, and a Butterbeer stand.  One quick service table dining experience is the Cafe L’air De La Sirene, a beautiful cafe filled with French cuisine.  Amazing chandeliers, beautiful marble, mosaics, and period pieces fill the walls and ceiling – it’s stunning.  We tried some great items here, including a brie and turkey sandwich, quiche, and the French onion soup, all delicious.  The biggest draw of this cafe is the Butterbeer Crepe, a crepe filled with butterbeer filling, topped with fresh whipped cream with hints of Butterbeer, a must-try.  The Le Gobelet Noir is a safe haven for Dark wizards and witches to hide from the Paris streets.  This restaurant features some great entrees, but we stopped in for some Butterbeer this visit!  The Bar Moonshine is a great spot to try some themed drinks and experience some fun character interactions.  We tried Lobe Blaster and Sherbert Lemon, both were amazing (and strong).  Within the streets of Paris, you’ll also find a Butterbeer stand to grab your favorite variation of the go-to Wizarding World drink.

So many shops to explore here, including a candy store, various merchandise stores, and of course, a new wand store to select your new Parisian wand for this Wizarding World.  The Cosme Acajor Baguettes Magique is home to delicate, exquisite wands to add to your collection.  You may even encounter the wandmaker Cosme Acajor herself within the store.  I had to purchase a new wand for this Wizarding World, and it’s so beautiful and detailed, I’ll cherish it forever!

This addition to the Wizarding World is beautifully detailed and holds the best queue I think I’ll ever experience in a theme park. Missing out on two big pieces of this portal was disappointing.  I do wish it was a little bit bigger with one more attraction but we’ll see what the future holds for expansion!

Dark Universe

Step through the portal and find yourself on the edges of the Darkmoor village, filled with tombstones, coffins, and graveyards, to reveal the focal point of the world: Frankenstein Manor.  Here you’ll find the home to classic Universal Monsters and new storylines to make your horror dreams come true.

Two themed attractions are found in the village of Darkmoor.  The main attraction is housed within Frankenstein Manor, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment.  Powered by the energy from the portal, you’ll feel this energy pulsate throughout the Darkmoor and connect at the top of Frankenstein Manor.  Here, Dr. Victoria Frankenstein, the great-great-great-granddaughter of Victor Frankenstein, is following in the family footsteps of bringing creatures back from the dead and attempts to control other monsters to keep them from terrorizing Darkmoor Village.  She’s given a helping hand from her assistant, Ygor, who is also found throughout Darkmoor village, providing some great character interactions. This queue and ride houses the most impressive animatronics I’ve ever seen, you’ll feel as though Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Mummy, Bride of Frankenstein, are truly alive and ready to give you chills and thrills as you make your way through the attraction.  This is a must-do attraction; the theming and advancements in animatronics come together to make a perfect dark ride addition to this world.  I rode it three times (huge horror fan here).  The other attraction within Dark Universe is the Curse of the Werewolf, a fun spinning coaster reaching 37 mph, sending you on a ride through the forest to be chased by werewolves.  This was a super fun coaster, I just wish it was a little longer!

Entertainment can be found throughout Darkmoor, lots of creatures wander, including Ygor and The Invisible Man.  Keep an ear out for a listen to the roaming violinist who can tell you tales of the village.  Within the Burning Blade Tavern, you’ll find monster hunters to help give you advice and provide you with tales of their adventures.  And lastly, you’ll find Frankenstein and his Bride for a great meet and greet.  This had my horror-loving heart so excited, it was perfect.

Great dining options are available in this world.  Here you’ll find the main quick service table dining Das Stakehaus themed to the catacombs of vampires.  This fun, dark-themed restaurant has some immersive paintings, statues, and lighting that changes.  We had some good food items here, including chicken on a stake, bits and pieces, and the forager salad.  The fun twist is that items are served on stakes with a Latin phrase translating to “at our discretion alone”.  The highlight of this restaurant was the desserts.  We tried the Labocoota, a Greek yogurt panna cotta brain, and the Red Velvet Death, a coffin cake with chocolate crumbs and puffed rice maggots.  Both were amazing and a must-try.  Be sure to stop in The Burning Blade Tavern, where you’ll find a hangout for monster hunters telling their tales. This tavern is a nod to the classic Universal Frankenstein film.  Within here, you’ll find some great drinks, including the Pure of Heart to protect you from monsters, and some great food items to mobile order.  We tried the Hunter’s Garlic Stake and the Burning Cheddar Bites, both really good.  Also, be sure to check out The Burning Blade Tavern at night to witness the flames on the windmill.  This occurs several times an hour, and a bell tower will ring to signal the sighting of monsters, resulting in the ignition of flames on the windmill.  You’ll also find De Lacey’s Cottage serving up a fun Frankenstein pretzel and some cinnamon bread snack items.

Within Darkmoor, you’ll find a few shopping experiences that house the Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience.  This parlor allows you to unleash your monster within with make-up artists transforming you into a werewolf, vampire, mummy, or Frankenstein.  While I didn’t experience this, I can’t wait to go on my next trip.  It looks so fun and a horror dream to further immerse yourself within Darkmoor.

Overall, as an ultimate horror fan and a lover of Halloween Horror Nights, this world was perfect for me.  The level of detail and immersion into the dark world was amazing, I never wanted to leave.  I wish it were larger with a couple more entertainment aspects and attraction elements.  However, I’m hopeful it will expand as time goes on.  I can’t wait to go back already!

Super Nintendo World

Jump through the green pipe and head into a world of Mario and Donkey Kong.  Gold coins, mystery boxes, Peach’s Castle, Piranha Plants, and more greet you upon completing your travel.  A total immersive experience, hearing all the sounds and witnessing all the sights, you’re truly inside The Mushroom Kingdom, and it’s a spectacular adventure.  This world is massive, with every detail of a Mario game on display and some really fun interactive games for all ages to enjoy.  Passing through Mushroom Kingdom, you’ll find yourself entering Donkey Kong Country, a massive jungle filled with beautiful waterfalls, tall trees, and lots of fun adventures.

Super Nintendo World is home to three attractions, incorporating various beloved characters, games, and missions.  The main attraction within Super Nintendo World is themed to the beloved Mario Kart games.  Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge allows you to immerse yourself in augmented reality.  Strapping on a pair of googles, you’ll battle against Bowser and race against your favorite characters. You’ll steer, collect gold coins, and shoot your blue shells within the race just as you do playing at home. The best is the immersive element of being within some of the greatest race tracks, including Twisted Mansion, Royal Raceway, Dolphin Shoals, and the classic Rainbow Road.  The design of these race tracks is amazing, I just wish they were more visible with the augmented reality goggles.  For a slower-paced attraction and a great view of Nintendo World, Yoshi’s Adventure allows you to ride through the Mushroom Kingdom and help Yoshi search for glowing eggs.  This is a super family-friendly attraction, a little short, but it’s a nice way to take a break and take in the sights of the world.  It’s a cute little attraction and great to view the Mushroom Kingdom in a slow place.  Within Donkey Kong Country, you’ll find Mine-Cart Madness, a coaster filled with new technology, including the ability to “hop” the track through the jungle to protect the Golden Banana.  This coaster performs new maneuvers never completed before on a coaster, allowing for a unique experience.  We attempted to ride this attraction a few times during our visits; however, given delays and increased wait times, we were not able to enjoy it this trip!  Feedback from others indicates it’s a fun ride, but can be rough!

Let’s talk about the main attraction of this world, the ability to immerse yourself in a lot of interactive games and activities for everyone in the family.  When purchasing a Power-Up Band, you’ll be able to participate in various key challenges throughout the world to help Princess Peach defeat Bowser Jr.  Once you complete and win three keys, you’ll have the chance to compete in the Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown to recover the stolen Golden Mushroom.  We did not complete this interactive challenge, but instead used our Power-Up Band to collect some coins and punch some question blocks. It’s a super fun way to spend some time within this world.  You can even track your score, rankings, and unlock some hidden surprises.  This could keep you busy for hours within this world alone.  You’ll also be able to meet and greet with some of your favorite characters, including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, and Donkey Kong.

The Mushroom Kingdom is home to a few dining experiences.  The Toadstool Cafe serves up some favorite food items created by Chef Toad himself, from themed burgers to spaghetti and a question block Tiramisu dessert. There are a lot of different food items to choose from for the family.  Turbo-Boost Treats serves up your popcorn bucket dreams with either selecting a Super Star or Mario Kart popcorn bucket, as well as a Super Mushroom souvenir drink.  Within Yoshi’s Snack Island, you’ll find a variety of juices, smoothies, and small snack items.  Back in Donkey Kong Country, you’ll find the Bubbly Barrel that serves a Donkey Kong Crush float with banana pineapple soft serve, pineapple soda, toffee pieces, and caramel popcorn.  This was the world where we did not try food items besides a Yoshi frozen melon drink, which was very good.  Given that the Nintendo World has been present at Universal Hollywood, many of us have experienced the food items before, so we explored the other food options at Epic Universe.

This world is an immersive gamer’s dream come true.  Living a Mario game in real time and completing the games and race tracks you’ve come to know and love so much at home is super fun and exciting.  At times, this world can be a bit overwhelming with the amount of stimuli and attractions within, but take it slow and find the details!

There you have it.  All that Epic Universe has to offer and explore!  I’m sure there are even smaller details and hidden gems we will continue to discover as time goes on, but exploring this brand-new park before the official opening was a dream.  I enjoyed every moment of immersing myself into worlds I knew but now know even further.  This theme park will elevate the park-going experience, and I’m excited to see what other additions will come as the Celestial energy may power even more for us to explore in the future ahead!

As always, my fellow advisors and I are here to help you plan the most Epic experience, which includes making incredible memories you’ll cherish for years to come!

Insider Tips:

  • Stay on Universal Orlando Property to gain early park entry.  If looking to experience only all Epic has to offer, staying at resorts close to the park is key.  For this trip, we stayed at Stella Nova and enjoyed a 12 minute walk to the park each day.
  • Early park entry for Universal Resort guests begins 1 hour prior to park opening.  During this time period, only Super Nintendo World is open however we discovered some of the portals opening earlier allowing us access to Isle of Berk and a quick walk-on for Hiccups Wing Gliders.
  • There are a lot of single rider options for the attractions here.  In order to cut some wait time and as long as you don’t mind being split from your party, take advantage of utilizing this single rider line.  Hard to say if this will be available in the early months of opening due to high crowd level, but keep an eye out for it!
  • The Yellow side for Stardust Racers is said to be less intense with less airtime out of your seat.  Either way, I feel you can’t go wrong though 🙂
  • Lockers for rides are now within the ride queues.  The locker rental is now via facial recognition requiring a photo of you prior to the locker opening.  Once you leave the attraction, you will obtain your items from the other side of the locker providing your photo again.  This is amazing! Just remember your locker section number!
  • You’ll find hidden interactive elements in Super Nintendo World, keep an eye out for Power-Up Band markers throughout the world.
  • There is also a hidden super interactive Wizarding Spell casting area near Le Goblet Noir, featuring a talking portrait.  Be sure to check it out and interact with this one!
  • Utilizing the Universal App is necessary.  You’ll be able to walk into quick service table dining experiences and utilize QR codes at your table to place your order, pay via Universal App and receive your food items while sitting and enjoying the ambience of the restaurant.
  • Ok, here we go: the virtual queue for Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry.  This is a difficult task to obtain a spot to enjoy this attraction but here is what we learned from our experience (even if we were not successful).  Ensure you are not using Universal’s Wifi and that your data is on 5G on and not auto.  You will attempt to grab a time at 10:45am, 11:00am, 3:00pm, and 6:00pm.  At that time, load up your Universal App, hit profile and select Virtual Lines.  This will take you to the landing page of the attraction.  Once the time arrives, keep hitting the virtual line and toggling back and forth until the Virtual Queue symbol lights up blue, then hit it.  You then select the number in your party (we were told hit 2 if you have 3 and they would honor an additional person, this allows better chances to get a time).  If you’re lucky enough and times pop up, hit the middle times that are listed.  I hope and wish you well in this challenge! This virtual queue won’t be forever but it’s frustrating for the time being.
